Frequently Asked Questions
What are health fairs?
A health fair is an outreach event designed to provide free basic preventative medicine and medical screening to people who otherwise would not receive it. They can be conducted at local community centers, schools, parks, etc. Services typically offered include screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, vision, and more! Our duty at health fairs is to provide vision screenings.
What are vision screenings?
Vision screenings detect whether a visual problem is present in those without signs of any disease. Although they are typically performed to catch and properly treat vision deficiencies early, vision screenings are not as effective as a visit to the doctor. This is the reason we encourage all patients to receive a comprehensive eye examination from an eye care professional by providing them with information about eye disease and any available health coverage program for which they qualify.
Why are vision screenings important?
Many sight-threatening diseases, when detected early, can be cured or treated to prevent the progression of vision loss. Though the most important preventive step is receiving routine examinations through vision screenings, we are able to identify those patients whose visual acuity indicate they have a potential eye disease and refer them to eye doctors for diagnosis and treatment.
How do I get trained to conduct a vision screening?
Each quarter, we have a representative from Jules Stein Eye Institute train members on how to properly conduct a vision screening. When the next training session is scheduled, we will let you know of when, where, and how you can sign up.

Becoming a Jules Stein Eye Institute Affiliate
What is the Jules Stein Eye Institute?
An establishment founded in 1966 right off the campus of UCLA by ophthalmologist, business man, and philanthropist Jules Stein and his wife Doris Stein. They created an institute dedicated to the preservation of vision and prevention of blindness and treat a wide range of eye disorders today.
Why do I need to become a JSEI Affiliate?
The reason we have all of our members become JSEI Affiliates is so our student volunteers are legally insured under the blanket of Jules Stein Eye Institute just in case any problems ever arise. It is merely a precautionary measure.
*You cannot participate in a health fair until after you've become a JSEI Affiliate*
The sooner you start with the JSEI Application process the better! Becoming a JSEI Affiliate is a multi-step process and takes about 3-4 weeks, depending on how quickly you do the necessary parts. It entails the JSEI Application, two-step TB test, a background check, and fill out some paperwork with Veronica Avila at Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI).
What is the very first step in becoming a JSEI Affiliate?
PART 1: Fill out a JSEI application ( multiple documents that can be found under resources) and submit them in person or electronically over email to Shirley Egbert the volunteer coordinator.
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (310) 206-7128
Office Location: Bank of America building on the corner of Le Conte / Westwood Blvd. Ste. 600.
What is the second step in becoming a JSEI Affiliate?
Complete HIPAA, volunteer code of conduct form, media, and communications release form, and a copy of your drivers license with Veronica Avila (call or email to set up an appointment)
Complete Live Scan and TB test (forms can be found under resources or provided by Veronica)
Must submit and complete in person all forms with Veronica
Who is Veronica Avila ? She works at the Personnel Office of JSEI and helps Bruins in Focus Members complete the process to becoming affiliates. She handles all of the paperwork we give her and ensures that we clear all the requirements. You can contact her at A[email protected]. Veronica does this in addition to all of her normal work, so please be patient when emailing her.
Email: [email protected]
Phone: (310) 206-5402
Where is Veronica's office located?
Veronica's office is located inside of Jules Stein Eye Institute building on the second floor in Room 2-158, and is open on weekdays from 3PM-4PM to students who are in the process of becoming a JSEI Affiliate.
Where should I go to get my 2 step TB test done?
You can get your test done anywhere as long as you bring back proper dated and signed proof of your results (nurses will provide this). The closest and most convenient place would be the Ashe Center; simply schedule an appointment online and pay $12 (with or without SHIP). You may also contact Veronica and get a referral slip to get it done at the David Geffen School of Medicine.
Where should I get my LiveScan done?
You get your LiveScan completed at the security office located inside Jules Stein room B8-153. Their office hours are Mon-Thurs 8:30AM - 11:30AM and 1PM-4PM; and Fridays 8:30AM-11:30AM. (There is a map with directions on the back of your LiveScan form that you can download and print here)
What do they do during the process of a LiveScan?
You will need your ID and your LiveScan form which you can download and print here. You will be fingerprinted and asked to fill out a form for a background check. It should take no longer than 20 minutes unless there are a lot of people waiting for one.
Where can I get a complete check list of everything I need to do to become an affiliate.
Right here!
**Note: To complete step two, we no longer visit Cindy in Human Resources but Veronica instead!**
What should I do with all the forms that Veronica gives me?
Fill all the forms out and take all the privacy quizzes following the directions that Valentino gives you and get them back to him ASAP.
Why are there so many forms to fill out?
Jules Stein Institute needs to ensure that their volunteers are properly informed and trained of privacy policies for legal reasons. HIPPA especially should be understood and put into practice by all our volunteers.
How will I receive confirmation of my affiliation?
Shirley will email you (and us) to notify us about your clearance and then you are ready to start volunteering at all those health fairs!! :)
Do I need to do all of these steps in a particular order?
The order we have given you is the easiest way. Veronica cannot help you unless you have your JSEI application completed along with a LiveScan and TB test verification but it does not matter if you get a LiveScan before the TB test.
How long does the whole process take?
Overall, give yourself about 1 month to become an affiliate. However, the duration of the process depends on how long you take to complete each step along the way. The TB test results take about 48 hours once you have completed both the second and first parts of the 2 step TB test, and the LiveScan takes a few days to 2 weeks. The last step, obtaining confirmation from Shirley, usually takes the longest - usually no longer than two weeks - depending on how busy she is.
I can’t volunteer with BIF on weekends. Are there other weekday opportunities available?
As long as you are on our emailing list, you will get emails throughout the year listing new health fairs that you can attend. They take place during various days of the week at various times so you are free to pick and choose the ones that work best for you. Keep in mind that this occurs on a first come first serve basis and that we try to circulate so that every member gets a chance to volunteer.
